Use of artificial intelligence
Scope
This policy governs the use of generative artificial intelligence tools (programs that produce text, images, code or analysis from prompts) by those who write, review or edit for Revista Saberes Internacionales. It follows the COPE position on authorship and AI tools and the Heredia Declaration on the use of AI in scholarly publishing.
Authors
Artificial intelligence cannot be listed as an author or co-author, because it cannot answer for the content or approve the final version. Whoever signs the article answers for every data point and every reference, including the parts where a tool was involved.
These tools may be used for support tasks: improving the wording, translating a draft, organizing data or checking code. Such use is declared at the end of the manuscript, in a section titled "Statement on the use of artificial intelligence", giving the tool's name, version, date and the specific task it was used for. If no tool was used, the section says so.
AI may not be used to generate the results, the data or the central interpretations of the work, nor the references. Citations produced by these tools can be plausible and yet non-existent; a single fabricated reference is enough to reject the manuscript or retract the published article. AI-generated images or figures are accepted only when they are the object of study, and they are identified as such in their caption.
Reviewers
The manuscript a reviewer receives is confidential. It must not be uploaded, in whole or in part, to AI tools or online services that retain what they receive. The report is written by the reviewer, who may use a spell checker but may not hand over judgment on the work to a machine.
Editorial team
The editorial team does not upload unpublished manuscripts to open AI tools either. The Turnitin similarity report includes an indicator of AI-generated writing, which is used as an alert and never as proof: a high value leads to asking the author for clarification before any decision.
Non-compliance
Undisclosed use that affects the results, data or references is treated as an integrity breach, following the COPE flowcharts and the journal's publication ethics statement. This policy will be reviewed every year as tools and international recommendations change.
